War remains in Batsfjord
War remains in Batsfjord
There are some war remains in Batsfjord. Here is a plate in commemoration of the liberation of Batsfjord fishing village. The text says that the German supply ship
Margaretha ran aground
at the Batsfjord harbour 22nd October 1944.
And above right picture is the propeller from
Margaretha.
In the the fishing village there are remains at the Storholmen. We see the remains of a bunker and a battery.
There are also some remains of a battery on a hill south of the sports center.
At Makkaur there are remains of coastal fortresses. It was equipped with 5 x 14,5 cm K405(F) guns, with a range of 19 000 metres.
It was ready for use in June 1942. In the autumn of 1944 it was blown up by its own crew.
The fortress at Makkaur is near the old lighthouse.
Visiting lighthouses is a popular activity for many.
Makkaur lighthouse is located in the north of the Finnmark municipality of Batsfjord. It was built in 1928. It is one of the furthest north in the world.
There is a fantastic view from here.
See this
video from the lighthouse.
(It is is Norwegian, but the pictures speak their own language).
Another fortress was at Hamningberg. The easiest way to get to Hamningberg is to go to Vardö and proceed from there to Hamningberg.
See
map.
Here is a list of Finnmark and Northern Finland fortresses.
The list gives an idea of where the
war remains in Batsfjord are, together with the other.
In neighbouring municipality Berlevag there are
war remains at Kongsfjord.
