Experience the Norwegian Coastal Express
What about getting to Lapland on a sea voyage?

Norwegian Coastal Express

An alternatively is to take the Norwegian Coastal Express (Hurtigruten) to Kirkenes in Norwegian Lapland. Thus you can visit many ports along the Norwegian coast. Along the coast you'll have the most magnificent sights. This sea voyage is called the "World's most beautiful sea voyage".

Hurtigruten at Vardø in Norwegian Lapland
Of course, you don't have to start your sea voyage in Bergen. You can embark at any port and disembark wherever you like. You can take a long or a short trip. You can even bring your car with you to the next harbour or all the way. You can also combine this voyage with bus, train or plane.

In the picture we see one of the ships arriving at Vardø (see map below)

Lapland ports

Hurtigruten stops at 11 ports on the Norwegian Lapland (Finnmark) coast (northward bound): Øksfjord, Hammerfest, Havøysund, Honningsvåg, Kjøllefjord, Mehamn, Berlevåg, Båtsfjord, Vardø, Vadsø and Kirkenes.

Great landscapes

You will no doubt see dramatic landscapes and majestic fjords. You can get a touch of Lapland culture and Lapp culture. In summer you will experience the white nights of the north. The midnight sun is special. The nights are light even if it is cloudy.

In winter you'll will feel an athmosphere that is totally different. The darkness and the twilight. The blue light. The aurora borealis. But despite the cold you will feel the warmth of the people. Whatever season you choose for visiting Lapland, the experience is absolutely different, and the memories will last for the rest of your life.

The fleet

A fleet of 11 ships has ensured that each of the 34 (35 in summer) ports was visited twice daily, 365 days a year - once by the "Nordgående" (Northbound) and once by "Sørgående" (Southbound). The exception being the end points of the journey where there is one visit a day.

These ships are currently used in the Norwegian Coastal Express:
MS Lofoten
MS Kong Harald
MS Nordlys
MS Nordkapp
MS Richard With
MS Polarlys
MS Nordstjernen
MS Finnmarken
MS Midnatsol
MS Trollfjord
MS Vesterålen

The new, bigger ships are more luxurious with their jacuzzis, bars, restaurants and other things that enhance your feelings of comfort and well-being. And Hurtigruten still serves the local societies along the coast as an important passenger and cargo transporter.
